“Collaboration” is one of those words that gets thrown around so casually in the creative and marketing world that it’s almost lost its meaning. Everybody wants to collab. Not everybody knows how to pitch a collab in a way that makes the other party actually want to say yes.
At The Ad Guys, one of the more exciting parts of my role as Lead Follow-Up Assistant is handling outreach to media platforms across different niches, exploring collaboration opportunities on behalf of our team and our clients. And let me tell you: pitching media partnerships is a skill that is very much learnable, and very much worth learning.
So let’s get into it.
Why Media Partnerships Matter for a Marketing Agency
Before we talk about the “how,” let’s talk about the “why.”
The Ad Guys operate in a full-service marketing and advertising space. We do everything from Social Media Management and Google Ads to Guest Posting, Link Building, and everything in between. Media partnerships serve a few key purposes for us:
- Expanding reach — Getting in front of audiences we wouldn’t otherwise access
- Building credibility — Association with respected media outlets signals expertise
- Creating content pipelines — Collaborative content fuels SEO, PR, and brand awareness simultaneously
- Driving qualified leads — The right media partnership can put us in front of people who actually need our services
In short, smart collaborations don’t just feel good, they make business sense.
The Different Types of Media Collaborations we Explore
Not all partnerships look the same. When we reach out to media platforms, we’re usually exploring one or more of these formats:
- Guest blog posts / articles — We create high-value content for their platform (great for SEO and thought leadership)
- Sponsored content / advertorials — Paid placement that looks and reads like editorial content
- Newsletter features — A mention or feature in their email list, reaching a curated audience
- Social media cross-promotions — Shared campaigns or shoutouts across platforms
- Podcast appearances or sponsorships — Tapping into the massive podcast audience in Nigeria and beyond
- Event partnerships or webinars — Co-hosting an online event that benefits both audiences
Each type requires a slightly different pitch approach, but the fundamentals stay the same.
The Anatomy of a Media Pitch That Actually Gets Replies
Step 1: Do Your Homework (Seriously)
This is where most people mess up. They find a platform, see big numbers, and immediately fire off a generic pitch. Big mistake.
Before reaching out to any media platform, we spend time:
- Reading their content to understand their voice, audience, and values
- Studying what kind of partnerships or features they’ve done before
- Identifying the right person to contact (editors, partnership managers, content leads)
- Understanding the gaps in their content calendar that we could fill
When your pitch shows that you’ve done your homework, you stand out immediately. Because most people haven’t.
Step 2: Lead With Their Value, Not Yours
This is probably the single most important rule of any outreach pitch.
Nobody cares about what the collaboration does for you. They care about what it does for them specifically, for their audience.
Weak pitch opener:
“Hi, we’re The Ad Guys, a marketing agency in Nigeria, and we’d love to collaborate with your platform…”
Strong pitch opener:
“Hi [Name], I’ve been following [Platform] for a while and noticed your audience is particularly engaged with content around growing a business online. I have an idea for a piece on [specific, relevant topic] that I think would generate serious engagement from your readers — and I’d love to contribute it.”
The first is about you. The second is about them. Feel the difference.
Step 3: Make the Ask Specific and Easy
Vague asks to die in inboxes. Instead of “let us know if you’d like to work together,” be specific:
“Would you be open to a quick 15-minute call this week to explore this? Or if you’d prefer, I can send over a full pitch brief for you to review at your own pace.”
Give them options. Give them clarity. Make it as easy as possible to say yes.
Step 4: Show Social Proof Without Bragging
Somewhere in your pitch (naturally, not desperately), signal that you’re worth collaborating with. This could be:
- A past piece you’ve written that performed well
- A client result that speaks to your expertise
- A brand or publication that’s featured you before
- Your agency’s portfolio or credentials
Don’t lead with this, earn your way to it. But don’t leave it out either.
Step 5: Follow Up (You Knew This Was Coming)
Media inboxes are chaotic. Editors and content managers are juggling multiple things at once. If you don’t hear back in 5-7 business days, a polite, value-packed follow-up is totally appropriate.
Don’t guilt them. Don’t be passive-aggressive. Just show up again with a fresh angle:
“Hey [Name], just circling back on this — I actually put together a quick outline of the piece I had in mind. Would love to share it if you think it could be a fit!”
Coming back with more makes you look prepared and passionate, not desperate.
What Happens After a Partnership Is Agreed
Landing the partnership is just the beginning. The real work and the real value comes from executing it brilliantly, so that:
- Their audience genuinely benefits from the content
- Both parties see measurable results
- The relationship opens doors to future collaborations
At The Ad Guys, we treat every media partner like a long-term relationship, not a one-off transaction. Because in this industry, reputation travels fast and the best way to keep getting opportunities is to make every opportunity count.
What Makes The Ad Guys Different in This Space
We’re not just a Nigerian agency; we’re a team of strategic creatives who understand how to tell stories that connect with audiences. When we approach a media platform for a partnership, we’re not just bringing our name. We’re bringing:
- Deep expertise across 10+ digital marketing services
- A track record of real, measurable results for clients
- The ability to create content that serves audiences genuinely
- A team that understands local and international market dynamics
That’s what we put on the table. And that’s why our pitches land.
The Bottom Line
Media partnerships are one of the most powerful (and underutilised) tools in a marketing agency’s growth strategy. But they only work when the outreach is thoughtful, personalised, and genuinely valuable to the other party.
Collab or not? When the pitch is done right, it almost always collab.
